The Pembroke Community Choir is a non-auditioned group of about 80 people of all ages and musical ability. We combine vocal work and fun to achieve the best possible musical entertainment for the community. Our performances are accompanied by professional musicians, and frequently make use of both professional and Choir member soloists. If you love to sing, you’re welcome to join us!
You can come to a rehearsal or two without any obligation, to see if it works for you. We rehearse on Monday nights from September to April, and perform 2 concerts each year.
2009 was our Jubilee year! Our Homecoming Banquet on May 23 2009 was a huge success, with 150 in attendance. Our Christmas concert to a packed church hall featured highlights of the last 50 years, including compositions by our second director, Dr. James Gayfer, and was conducted by our director of more than 25 years, Kevin Nieman.
To cap off our celebrations, we were invited to sing at the arrival of the Olympic Torch in Pembroke on December 13. A crowd of 5000 stood in the snow at the Marina while Brian Dinwoodie touched the flame to the cauldron and we sang the Olympic anthem “There’s a Light / Cette flamme” by Gregory Charles.
In January 2010, we welcomed conductor Juanita Kennedy who is well known for her work with the Cantando Singers in Deep River. Under her expert direction, we performed “Canadian Rhapsody”, a Christmas concert featuring arrangements of carols by Conrad Susa, and most recently a Spring season of “water music”.
For the Fall 2011 session, a familiar face returned to the podium. Gerald Laronde led us in a Christmas program which included Vivaldi’s Gloria. He also led us down Pembroke Street for our first performance in the Parade of Lights!
In the Spring, Jamie Loback, who accompanied us as a student and is now a choir director in Ottawa, will be leading additional rehearsals and directing us in a joint concert with the Pembroke Symphony Orchestra, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
